00:09 Monday, December 3, 2007 :: More Bands ::
I've updated the rotation with more bands that are now in the Pandora mix. 10 Years, Flyleaf, bands like that. As always, if you think we need to seed RadioMojo's station with a song or artist, hit the Contact page, mind the renovation dust and drop me a line.
13:47 Monday, November 26, 2007 :: Gobble Free ::
I'm sure you've all seen or heard Adam Sandler's Time for Turkey from Saturday Night Live. I feel that every year since it's been released I've been inundated with it over the airwaves. It doesn't matter what format a station is. . .Top 40, Alt Rock, etc. . . they all seem to play the song. . . except this year. This is the first that I did not hear the song once. And I'm not complaining. I'm rejoicing! I hope other stations out there are starting to get the hint from their smart listeners and altering their playlists to include good music that can further the music industry and help other artists grow.
 12:30 Saturday, October 27, 2007
We're back on the air. . . in a manner of speaking. Through the power of Pandora RadioMojo is spinning the best in Modern & Alternative Rock! So give a listen. If you know Pandora then you know the station will constantly be tweaked to meet RadioMojo's goal of unadulterated rock. So once again, fire up the Mojo!

"Hello? Is this Jem? Hi, it's Mike from RadioMojo.com. . . I interviewed you over 3 years ago in Virginia. Yeah, the fat, balding guy. Yep, I didn't know how to work the recorder well. Yes, I made that sign for you about recording your third album in Germany. Funny you should mention albums. . . I was calling to find out if you were ever going to release your second one that we've all been waiting for since, say, 2005. I've heard you were working on it. I haven't seen you touring. It's hard to find any updated info about you since Google loves to mix you with that 80's cartoon show. So. . .yeah. . . .where is it? Second album? Have you retired already? Having issues with ATO? We'd really like to know.
Hello?
Jem?
OK, I guess you're phone is busted because I can't hear you so call me back instead. Or e-mail me. Or, you know, update your website past December of 2006.
Take care." {click}

Apparently I'm a little slow to the party. Maybe because I don't get HBO. For something a little different from rock, but really funny, check out this Flight of the Conchords clip on YouTube. It's called The Humans Are Dead.
17:12 Friday, August 10, 2007
OK, so we all knew I couldn't stay away for THAT long. Mojo is going to stay alive just without the stream. So I'll still be bringing you reviews and interviews from time to time. OK? OK.
So while I get myself settled in, you take a look at the pics from my last interview before we closed. I got to chat with August House ( Website : MySpace) at The State Theatre back ( Website : MySpace) back on March 21st.
Later,
Mike

Thank you. . . and goodnight.
RadioMojo.com will be closing it's stream by early June. We'd like to thank all of our listeners, supporters, bands and venues for everything. It's been a great seven years and we've had a blast on the internet airwaves. Times have changed though and all good things must come to an end. We have a few more band updates to place on the website and we'll occasionaly let you know about new bands or shows, but for the most part, this site will slowly start to come down.
Thank you again to everyone. Rock on!

There, there. I know you've missed these little updates of ours, but no need to cry over it. We've never really been away, just hiding in the code and planning some new things to bring to you all. Except for that guy in the polka dot shirt. . . we've got nothing for him.
Some brief DC music news. . . Since you know we're stalkers of Taylor Carson, mark down March 24th at Iota. It's his CD release party for "Tangled in Truth." That's it. Go away. Listen to the music.

The EMERGENZA music festival is hitting Washington, DC this weekend starting Thursday, so if you're looking for something to do and want to hear some great music from unsigned bands, head over to the Velvet Lounge. Specifically, make it in time to see Taylor Carson (www.taylorcarson.com / www.myspace.com/taylorcarson) play at 10pm on Saturday night. Taylor just finished recording his second full length album and is sure to rock some of his newer tunes. More info about the Saturday night show is here.

Mark down September 22nd on your Rock Calendar if you're in the DC area. Niki Barr will be playing the Birchmere along with local favorites, Fighting Gravity for their CD release party. If you haven't seen Niki and the band live yet, read our review of her show at the State Theatre last year for an idea of what you've been missing. She owns the stage and it's a show not to be missed.
Another show not to be missed is on the 23rd. Stop by Iota where Taylor Carson will be playing many of his newer songs that are going on his next CD that is in the process of being recorded.
|
|
22:43 EDT Sun August 13, 2006
Raise your hand if you want new music! OK, here you go. Listen in for a new track from Divided by Zero, off their new CD The Black Sea. While you're listening, make sure to stop by their record company Sik World Records. They also dabble in some funny ass t-shirts. So head that way, buy a few dozen shirts and tell them that RadioMojo sent you.

22:07 EDT Sat July 22, 2006
If you're in the Northern Virginia area on Tuesday the 25th, stop by Iota in Arlington early and catch Jenny Boyle. It's her forst show back at Iota after her CD release party there last month and should be a good time. Once you've caught Jenny's set, stick around, say "hi" and then head over to Ragtime to catch Lisa Williams. Who knew you were so popular and had two things to do in one night?!
Since our tech support sucks (yeah, blame Mike) and our systems were down two weeks ago, we did not get a chance to mention two shows, Down To This and Taylor Carosn. So be sure to check our their sites (http://www.downtothis.com and http://www.taylorcarson.com). Drop them a note, and tell them we say "hi".

10:39AM EDT Wed June 21, 2006
Happy Solstice! Hope you enjoy your summer or winter depending which hemisphere you're in.
Jenny Boyle's CD release party was a blast. If you did not make it, make sure you stop by one of her next shows and pick up her debut CD, "Life In Mosaic."
In music news, Andy Nicholson - the bassist for Artic Monkeys - has left the band. No real reason for the departure, but some blame it on fatigue from touring. they already have a backup bassist who will continue with the band so no current shows will be canceled. Sorry, but I still don't see why Britain is hailing these guys as the next Beatles/Oasis. They've got good music, but nothing special.
Show's that will be canceled are Modest Mouse's August shows. The band wants to get back in the studio to complete their next album. Can't blame them for that.
On the opposite front, Velvet Revolver is getting out of the studio to do a mini tour. More from livedaily.
Lastly, save June 27th if you're in DC. Dresden Dolls is sold out, but We Are Scientists and Lisa Williams(at right) are still open. Check below for more details.

|
13:38PM EDT Wed June 14, 2006
Attention DC! Get out of the heat this weekend and make it over to Jenny Boyle's CD release party at Iota. It's a 3pm day show on Saturday, June 17th.
The next thing to save your money for is June 27th. Dresden Dolls, We Are Scientists and Lisa Williams are all playing that night, but at different venues.
Dresden Dolls at 9:30
We Are Scientists at Black Cat
Lisa Williams at Ragtime

No thanks to our crappy streaming company, we're back on air after about 10 hours. They were updating their servers and caused thousands of stations to not restart and then claimed it wasn't their fault because it worked for them. Now that's customer service.

It was a great weekend in DC for local music. Caught Taylor Carson, Emmit Swimming, Getaway Car and The Hickories at the State Theatre on Friday, The Speaks, Koshari and The Pharmacy Prophets on Saturday at Iota, and then an Open Mic hosted by Taylor Carson on Sunday at Ragtime. Saw bands and musicians at all levels of their careers and there is no shortage of good music from all genres coming in the future.
A couple notes of what stood out. Taylor Carson on a big stage is a show not to be missed. Just get up close early because his following of "Curious" dancers keeps getting larger.
Koshari is a nice sounding Progressive/Ambient group. The four piece is sure to be making strides in the near future.
Last is The Speaks. Fun, energetic alternative rock. And lead singer Raf's minimohawk is not something he sports during his day job, according to his boss who was at the show. You'll be hearing more about The Speaks from us soon.

And that's just a half day.

Pictures: 1, 2, 3 Thanks to a little weekend getaway in Connecticut, some of us in the Mojo Crew were able to take in a couple New England local bands. First on the bill was LivinTrust. Their solid rock and lead singer Art's playfulness with the audience(he ventured onto the bar twice and into the crowd at least as many times) is sure to be a hit as they expand their touring outside of CT. You can visit the guys at http://www.livintrust.net and listen in for one of their tracks on our streams soon.
Next up was i. Yes, just the letter i. They have shirts for sale with the creative slogan of "i love i". Let everyone else figure out if you like the band our are egotistical. Onto the show. Smacked in the middle of a five band bill, i was the most pleasing. Their unique sound filled with rock, club and middle eastern influences is a nice change from the current Brit Pop trend on most airwaves. Their live show is something of interest too. The band is so comfortable together and believe they have nothing to prove, so they interact often and sometime aggresivly on stage. Mock fights between guitarists; lead singer Scott showing off his karate kicking skills, all without missing a beat and in tune. The crowd pleaser of the evening seemed to be when guitarist Matt pulled out the Sitar for their last song. Check out i at their website http://www.thebandi.com and look for them at a venuw near you. In the meantime, you can listen in for Bring Hate and Like Hell here at RadioMojo.com.

Great show last Thursday at DC9. Taylor Carson and Snoozebox played highly energetic sets. It definetly showed why Snoozebox was one of our top five bands for 2005 and why Taylor Carson is so fast becoming the hit band in the DC area.
Not knowing eachother going into the gig, Taylor and Jason(of Snoozebox) quickly recognized eachother as classmates from their college days. Hopefully these two bands will be playing more gigs together in the future. Oh, and wish Taylor a happy birthday this Friday. He'll be turning an ancient 24.

Down To This is getting ready to release their next full length in the next couple months and I had the chance to hear some of the new tracks. Below is a quick review of what to expect.
"Down To This(dtt) is back with their first release under the Versatile
Records flag and is starting off the new leg of their career by
capturing your eardrums and not letting go. Songs like 'Funeral'
and 'Empty Rooms' grab you right away with their catchy choruses and
melodic flows from Timö’s guitar and Jason’s bass. 'Closer' and 'Our
Monologues' is filled with Derek Lee’s hard hitting beats that's great
for any toe-tapping, head-bobbing, mosh-pitting crowd and also shows
off Gyom's strong vocal style and range.
Overall, the band's latest effort is a triumph. The maturity and
diverseness of the sound and the band's tight playing is leaps beyond
their previous release. This band isn't just for metal followers
anymore; any rock fan needs to add dtt to their 'must have' list."

There was a blow today to DC's local music scene. FM station 104.1 (aka Z104) had it's format flipped from Modern to Classical. Z104 was a strong supporter of local music as RadioMojo.com is. We hope Jenni Chase and the other DJ's land on their feet, and keep pushing local bands, where ever they end up.
If you're a Z104 listener, then we welcome you to RadioMojo.com. We hope to fill the music hole that commercial radio left you with.

Just wanted to send a personal 'Thank You' to Jenny Boyle who let me sit in on a recording session over the weekend. Jenny's first CD, which should drop early next year, will showcase her husky vocal style in a variety of ways. And from the sneak peak I got, the wait will be worth it. If you want an idea of what to expect, check Jenny out at one of her gigs. Word has it she'll be doing more shows after the new year. --Mike

If you look up the term "One Hit Wonder" in an encyclopedia, all the latest editions will be sure to have the UK foursome, "The Darkness", as the answer. Their second album, just released two weeks ago, is already a worldwide flop. You can see the numbers at Undercover.com. <start rant>This must come as a shock to the group since their website describes them as "Rock-Based Music of Exceptional Quality" and declares that "THE DARKNESS HAVE SAVED ROCK 'N' ROLL ..AGAIN!" They obviously need a better quality assurance manager and need to stop trying to write Rock & Roll history.</end rant>

It seems that Scott Stapp is stirring up more bad publicity for himself than good publicity for his new album. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Korn's latest gig in NYC was lacking the normal enthusiasm. Could this be the end of the line for Korn and Nu-Metal? More here. . .
<start rant>Speaking of things that should end, Scott Stapp needs to go away. I've seen ads for his solo cd "The Great Divide" on mlb.com, during a NASCAR race, and he just popped up on yahoo too. Scott. . . it's over. You ended Creed to go after a solo career, and this is the problem I have with lead singers. . . they think they're creating new music that's different from their old band, but it sounds exactly the same. Stapp's new solo sounds like a song off of Creed's last cd. Scott, your voice hasn't changed, so why did you think you could create something new? And what's with whoring yourself out to every media outlet? Last I checked, whoring yourself wasn't a good thing in the Christian Rock Band Guidebook. Take a lesson from Amy Grant. . . enjoy your 15 minutes and then sink back from whence you came.</end rant>

A couple shows in the DC area this weekend you should try to make it to. First on Friday night, Niki Barr is playing at Ri Ra in Bethesda. Music starts at 10pm and there's no cover. Niki's show is a true experience. If you like just pure rock and like to watch musicians who know what they're doing, then check Niki out.
And second, Cedars and The Upwelling are playing at DC9 on Saturday. Show starts at 9:30pm and it's $8. Cedars(formerly Cartel) are a great DC based band. The music is a mix of coldplay meets Radiohead with some great material that's perfect for a fun, relaxed night out. The Upwelling, hailing from NYC, have a similar style to Cedars. The two bands complement eachother well, so this is a must see.

I know a lot of you have been hitting this site for news about Doug Meis and the others he was traveling with Thursday afternoon. Here is the best link of info I've found yet. Thanks to donewaiting.com for putting this together.
From what we've read, this was just a senseless act of one distraught 23 year old. The car Doug was in was hit at 70mph from behind while stopped behind another car at a light. It was an apparent suicide attempt that has now turned into 3 counts of murder. It seems this woman has taken her own life, but just not the way she expected. Hopefully it will be a long life in prison where she can reflect on how she took 3 talented musicians from us. Besides Doug(29) who was the drummer for EXO and The Dials, John Glick(35), the guitarist for the Returnables and Michael Dahlquist(39), the drummer for Silkworm were the others in the car. They were returning to work from lunch when the incident happened. I think a quote from one of EXO's songs says it best. . . "God save the Milky Way from us."
Our thoughts go out to Doug, John and Michael's families, friends and bands.

Sad news from our friends EXO out of Chicago. Drummer Doug Meis was killed in a car accident this week. Doug was in the car with two friends at a stop light when they were hit from behind and all 3 were killed. Our thoughts go out to Doug's family and EXO. Doug was a promising young drummer and we were looking forward to great new things from Doug and the band.

We have a couple new bands added to our Local Mojo collection for DC. First off we have Adelyn from Harrisonburg, VA. This rock quartet has has it's roots in JMU but is taking off with their new release All Systems Are down. Listen in for their single "Zero Hour."
Rocking away in DC is a five piece called Cartel. Their music is melodic, atmospheric rock(think Brit Pop/Radiohead) and is presented on their latest EP, Safety in Numbers. Listen up for "Fleets" and "Free.
Cartel will be playing at the Black Cat on Tuesday, May 24th. They'll be playing with Snowden and show time is 9pm. The Mojo crew will be there, so stop on by and give these guys a listen. Oh, and say hi to us.

The Dresden Dolls will be touring with Nine Inch Nails on their tour this spring in support of NIN's new album "With Teeth." Not only will the tour cover the US and Canada, but Germany, Austria, France and Mexico. Sounds like some great exposure for the Dolls.
In local news, Jenny Boyle will be doing a couple trips of her own to entertain US troops overseas. She'll be visiting Puerto Rico, Cuba and Honduras throughout June and July. Check out her calendar page for local dates.

Great seeing everyone at Taylor's gig Tuesday night. No surprise that he and Scott walked away the winners and have moved to the final round to be held in a couple of weeks. We did hear from two reliable sources that the Taylor Carson CD is one session away from being finished, so look for it to hit shelves in a couple of months.

Happy Festivus!
It's that time of year again. Let the music festivals begin! SXSW, Coachella and Bonnaroo are getting set. They're still a few months away, but start saving your money for some pretty decent lineups(Coachella looks to be pretty rocking right now).
