Skirtbox - Buckinghamshire, England
|
If you've heard a rumble coming from the North Atlantic, chances are you're hearing Skirtbox.
Hailing from the UK, this quartet of young punkers is infecting Europe with their fast, melodic anthems. From the almost metal/punk "Speared Love" to the classic punk tune "Star Of," Skirtbox's latest effort "Crouching Squirrel, Hidden Beaver"(Hectic Records) is definitely a gourmet dinner for the ears served up in fast food packaging.
Will Stapleton(lead vocals, guitar) leads the group vocally with his fresh voice, occasionally backed in harmony by Jon Dow(lead guitar, vocals). Stapleton's voice is close to Eve 6's Max Collins, and his clarity is not something you find from many British punk bands. Dow's guitar adds a certain 80's hair band rockish quality to the groups music. With licks reminiscent of Warrant and Metallica, Dow blends it into the groups offerings for a new look at punk. Tom Wright's bass and Matt Oliver's speedy chops on the drums layout the rest of the rhythm section in what is the strong backing of the band.
These four young gents definitely have something going for them and seem to be feeding off of the continent for growth. With a fan base almost worldwide thanks to their website (http://skirtbox.com) and guestbook, their newest effort will hopefully not be their last. A few trips to the punk Meccas world-wide might give them the boost they need to push for more shows and to get another CD out.

3against1 - San Diego, CA

|
Imagine waking up to the sounds of the breaking waves from the Pacific ocean. Imagine going to work with the sun on your face and then getting together with your buddies at night to rip out the best alternative hard rock in the city. Oh, and throw in a limo ride and party with Carmen Electra. Yes, I said Carmen. . . Electra. Welcome to the world of 3against1.
Hitting the scene during the summer of 2001, 3against1 has been putting their dues in up and down the west coast. Based in San Diego, 3a1 has amassed a strong following through the voice of front man Mark Weiss. His strong tenor sound is well backed by the guitar of Arnaud Lemaire. Combined with Jeff Williamson's bass and Saul Ashley's drums, 3against1 is certain to be making themselves heard beyond their current gig circuit. Their new demo CD is a great example of the powerful music these four produce and leaves little doubt as to why they're the best in San Diego.

Visqueen - Seattle, WA
|
Visqueen's arrived just in time for Summer. Their power pop tunes compliment any automobile as long as the windows are down and the volume is turned up. Rachel Flotard's(guitar\vocals) siren like voice grabs onto you during the first track of their new album "King Me" and doesn't let go. Produced by Barrett Jones(Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Melvins), Visqueen's from the heart music is a nice reminder of what music is supposed to be. From My House to Mrs. Elder, Flotard tells it like it is without the backing of a pop production studio. Her harmonies mesh with her guitar and are well supported by Kim Warnick's bass and Ben Hooker's drum kit.
With a slew of studio releases in May, Visqueen has a tough crowd to stick it's head up through. But with their slick off tempo jams and a set that can be played plugged in or acoustic, Flotard, Warnick and Hooker have the originality and the desire to play that will take them farther then their current West Coast home.
